Carl’s practice focuses on advising companies in protecting their intellectual property, specifically patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. He advises clients on intellectual property enforcement, defense and related agreements. He assists clients in protecting their intellectual property rights through litigation, cease-and-desist letters, negotiating consent agreements, and administrative proceedings.
Carl has clients in a broad scope of industries, including the following:

- Structural components
Carl has been a trial lawyer based in Boulder, Colorado, for the past 32 years. He has litigated a wide variety of cases in all areas of the law, including intellectual property, criminal, commercial, and products liability.
Carl’s intellectual property litigation experience includes working for almost a decade on the landmark case of Phillips v. AWH Corp., 415 F.3d 1303 (Fed. Cir. 2005) en banc in which he acted as the lead counsel for Phillips, the prevailing party in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit
Carl is licensed in the State of Colorado, in the U.S. District Court for Colorado, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Carl received a B.A. degree from Williams College, Williamstown, MA; and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Denver, College of Law.
Carl has lectured on patent claim construction for the Boulder County Bar Association, the Rocky Mountain IP and Technology Institute, the Colorado Bar Association, and Federal Circuit Bar Association.
